![]() ![]() During this phase of revising, I trim 10% from my book. I tend to go overboard rather than zero in on specific details. Then I start pruning, beginning with introspection-too much “internal monologue.” It took me a while, but I figured out that readers don’t need to know a character’s every thought! Another problem area for me is description. I note where the story drags or the plot falters. ![]() Here’s how I tackle the project.Īfter a “cooling period,” I read the printed manuscript. Multiple revisions are required before a book takes form. It’s impossible to do everything the first time around. Over the years, I’ve learned how to manage the chore. The task to refashion the story seems daunting. When I’m finished with my first draft, I have quite a mess to clean up. “The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” – Terry Prachett ![]() Today’s Guest Blogger is Linda Lee Williams, with a look at how she tackles writing a first draft, and then revising it. ![]()

![]() ![]() I also believe children see through surrealist eyes: they are seeing the world for the first time. I use surrealism a lot is because I was very affected by surrealist paintings when I was young. The word for this is ‘ defamiliarisation‘. In doing so, they help their audience to see objects we usually take for granted in a new way. Surrealists put disparate objects together. ‘Surreal’ means the viewer must contribute to derive meaning. ![]() Something in the work is ‘superimposed’ over the naïve reading. The word refers to art which makes use of paradoxes, riddles and allusions. But in relation to works of art, surreal means literally ‘over and above’, ‘more’. ‘ Surreal‘ in everyday English means ‘I didn’t understand it’. Like Belgian surrealist artist, Rene Magritte, Browne uses the same symbol over and over to convey meaning. The updated book contains four separate voices in first person and is far more surreal. ![]() Look closely and you’ll find minor elements that don’t quite fit the scene. ![]() In the earlier title, postmodern elements are nascently evident. Twenty years later (in 1998), Browne decided to redo this book in Postmodern style. Have you ever wanted to go back and redo old work? Next, the multispecies comparative analysis showed more genes involved in the regulation of cAMP signalling during bovine oocyte development. We found that the expression levels of most genes were down-regulated from GV to MII in all species. To reveal the unique transcriptional signatures of bovine oocyte development, we used integrated multispecies comparative analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to perform bioinformatic analysis of the germinal follicle (GV) and second meiosis (MII) gene expression profile from cattle, sheep, pigs and mice. Cattle ( Bos taurus) are a major large livestock, however, compared with other species, the transcriptional specificity of bovine oocyte development has not been emphasised. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ★ "This compelling, well-written narrative, which offers sometimes raw insight into human motivation and behavior, will have readers racing to the final pages and pondering its ideas long after." - VOYA (starred review) ★ "Debut novelist Wallach increases the tension among characters throughout, ending in a shocking climax that resonates with religious symbolism." - Publishers Weekly (starred review) And make sure to visit Apocalypse Already.
